Hook me up baby! (ideas needed for a hook for my persuasive speech about cats)?
Sponsored Links

I am giving a persuasive speech to inform pet owners of the harms of de-clawing cats, and to convince them to consider alternative methods to keep their cats from clawing the furniture.
Unfortunately, I am having a hard time coming up with a good hook to grab my audiences attention.
Best hook idea wins! ready..set…GO!!!

It should be a law to not declaw?
It is pure laziness why someone would declaw a cat. It is selfish and cruel. Look, I have had cats all of my life. My mother taught me and now I will tell you, it works. It is simple, but some extra work. You train it like you would any other animal. Showing it that it is a bad thing in a kind way. They will not respond to abuse, it will only get worse. Animals are only 4yrs old in their head, their entire life. So, think about how you would teach a 4 yr old not to do something. People are really ignorant when it comes to the animals that they own. How do people train dogs to fetch or roll over??? Same for cats. It just takes extra time and love on the owners side. It is a priveledge to own an animal and if you can not give them time, do not own them in the first place.
"Would you enjoy having someone pull your fingers out? Cats don’t either."
Go onto explain that claws are natural to a cat. A cat is not a cat without claws.
Cat owner extortion. Declaw my cat or I will have it put to sleep. Emotionally coercing vets do perform procedure.
Just hand people a pair of Heavy duty clippers and tell them to remove their finger nails starting at the first knuckle. When they look at you and gasp then you can explain, ("Well that is what happens when you de-claw your cat!)
Added: As for thumbs up! Not true to you. I have worked in a vet office (wanted to be a vet tech) and have seen it first hand myself. They do cut off the first knuckle and like ripping the claw out would be any better. Please rip you fingure nails off and see how you like it
IDK if this will help you, but I have seen references that compare declawing a cat to a human having their fingers amputated up to the first knuckle. It changes the way a cat walks, and can open them up to problems down the road. One of my cats went through a post-surgical infection eight years ago, and is now in danger of needing two toes on her right-front paw amputated because of it.
Alternatives; I have used a product called Soft Paws, which are claw caps that glue onto the claws and allow the cat full "use" of his claws yet protect the items he’s clawing from any damage. You can actually get them in a variety of colors; and once I found red/green colors for Xmas, LOL! The only downside is that they need to be reapplied 3 or 4 times a year. There is also a surgery (called a tendonectomy) that will disconnect the tendon the cat uses to operate the claw, so that they can still go through the motions but the claws do not extend out. HTH!!
Check out this question, people left a lot of comments about declawing, should help you out. Good luck.

I like the quote from Paul Rowen, DVM, Little Shelter Animal Sanctuary, New York: "You can’t declaw with love."
I still don’t understand why people say that declawing is done by taking out or off the first knuckle of the cats paw. Not true! I have seen this procedure done so many times. The animal doctor, or vet, takes a pair of pliers and yanks the claw out. He or she, then sutures the area where the claw was. It’s like "pulling" out our fingernails, ouch!
I remember one cat in particular that I had to deal with after his declaw. Beautiful, sweet, awesome cat, before his surgery. The owners wanted to have all 4′s done, at the same time. The next day, it was my honors to take his bandages off. Ugh, I couldn’t even get near this cats cage to get him out. He was going crazy! Blood all over his cage, his bandages dangling off of his paws, he was trying to chew them off himself. The doctor had to tranquilize him enough so I could do what I had to do. This cat went from being so sweet to the cat from h*ll. It broke my heart to see this happen to this cat. He truly was an awesome cat by far.
My method for scratching furniture. After owning 6 cats, that were all indoor cats and all had all of their claws. I went and bought some scratching posts, cat nip spray and treats. I sprayed all of the posts real well with catnip spray and put a few treats on the top. I took each cat, one by one and guided them up to the top of the post. Teaching them to scratch and crawl up the thing, showing them the treats at the top. It worked like a charm. I have also used old logs for scratching posts and they worked quite well too. Then, there is the squirt gun routine. I always recommend squirt guns to cat owners and tell them squirt the cat in the face. Cats hate water in their face and will run like mad while they are being squirted. I also tell owners to yell, loud as they squirt their cat. Let the cat know that it’s doing something that is not appreciated by the human. When I had my 6 cats, they all would congregate in the kitchen when I was trying to cook. I’d step on one, trip on another or knock one across the room because I never saw them. I kept a water bottle on the kitchen counter with water in it. I kept the nozzle on stream, like a squirt gun. When I would be in the kitchen trying to move around. I’d squirt each cat with water, in the face. They would take off like furry jets! Got to the point where all I would have to do is pick the bottle up and show them and they would take off.
Hope you find this helpful!
